Bistability and Switching Behavior in Moving Animal Groups

چکیده

Moving animal groups such as schools of fish and flocks birds frequently switch between different group structures. Standard models collective motion have been used successfully to explain how stable form via local interactions individuals, but they are typically unable produce that exhibit spontaneous switching. We only aware one model, constructed for barred flagtail known rely on alignment attraction organize their motion, has shown generate this type behavior in 2D (or 3D). Interestingly, another species fish, golden shiners, do switching use repulsion, not alignment, coordinate themselves schools. Suggesting may be explained by repulsion alone, without an interaction. Here we introduce a model based show exhibiting similar observed experiments with shiners emerges. also establish occur two boundary-free extensions the model. Our work suggests bistability other moving attractive repulsive alone.

Deciphering Interactions in Moving Animal Groups

Collective motion phenomena in large groups of social organisms have long fascinated the observer, especially in cases, such as bird flocks or fish schools, where large-scale highly coordinated actions emerge in the absence of obvious leaders. However, the mechanisms involved in this self-organized behavior are still poorly understood, because the individual-level interactions underlying them r...

Bayesian Inference for Identifying Interaction Rules in Moving Animal Groups

The emergence of similar collective patterns from different self-propelled particle models of animal groups points to a restricted set of "universal" classes for these patterns. While universality is interesting, it is often the fine details of animal interactions that are of biological importance. Universality thus presents a challenge to inferring such interactions from macroscopic group dyna...

Distinguishing social from nonsocial navigation in moving animal groups.

Many animals, such as migrating shoals of fish, navigate in groups. Knowing the mechanisms involved in animal navigation is important when it comes to explaining navigation accuracy, dispersal patterns, population and evolutionary dynamics, and consequently, the design of conservation strategies. When navigating toward a common target, animals could interact socially by sharing available inform...

How perceived threat increases synchronization in collectively moving animal groups.

Nature is rich with many different examples of the cohesive motion of animals. Previous attempts to model collective motion have primarily focused on group behaviours of identical individuals. In contrast, we put our emphasis on modelling the contributions of different individual-level characteristics within such groups by using stochastic asynchronous updating of individual positions and orien...

Multi-agent system dynamics: Bifurcation and behavior of animal groups

Systematic design of decentralized feedback for coordinated control of multi-agent systems has much to gain from the rigorous examination of the nonlinear dynamics of collective animal behavior. Animals in groups, from bird flocks to fish schools, employ decentralized strategies and have limitations on sensing, computation, and actuation. Yet, at the level of the group, they are known to manage...
